A commanding new voice in military thriller fiction.

A country on the brink.

A cartel leader rising from the shadows.

Two soldiers caught in a merciless game of survival.

In the heart of Belize’s turbulent underworld, Nardus, a Kriol man of unexpected heritage, is thrust into the leadership of the Sinaloa drug cartel after the former leader vanishes. As he grapples with his newfound power, a deadly vendetta ignites with the ruthless Guatemalan Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, led by the infamous El Carnicero, a man whose brutal reputation precedes him.

Meanwhile, British Army soldier Jack is entangled in a web of suspicion following the mysterious disappearance of a comrade, all while he fights to muster his courage against a brutal reality. To complicate matters, he is joined by Grace, a fierce and skilled infantrywoman returning from a personal crisis, who finds herself undercover in a world of chaos.

With danger lurking at every turn and loyalties tested, Jack and Grace must navigate a treacherous journey through the jungle as they confront enemies who will stop at nothing for their own gain. Can they untangle the web of betrayal and survive a conflict that threatens to engulf them all, or will they become pawns in a war that spans the dark underbelly of South America?

KEITH DOBSON served in the armed forces in Europe, Central America, and during the Falklands conflict. He later became a Detective Superintendent in Specialist Operations at Scotland Yard.

A powerful read with great discussion points — power, loyalty, survival, and what it means to do the right thing when everything around you is falling apart. Loved how layered the conflict was, both external and internal. Thanks to Foreshore Book Club for the reading copy.

I picked this up as a book club recommendation expecting a run-of-the-mill thriller, but this blew past my expectations. The cartels, the jungle setting, and the personal stakes felt vivid and immersive — a real page-turner.

I recieved this book via Foreshore’s Book Club. I don’t normally read military thrillers, but this one was compelling enough to pull me right in. The blend of political tension and personal stories made it accessible even to someone not usually drawn to the genre. Read it in one week and my husband is now half way through. Would highly recommend.

The story’s atmosphere and stakes are terrific, and the opening chapters had me hooked. At times the pacing slowed a bit for me, but the gritty world and constant sense of danger made up for it.

I loved the authentic feel of the military elements — it’s clear the author knows what he’s writing about. The characters are flawed in believable ways, and their journey through Belize’s underworld made for an intense, thoughtful thriller. (Foreshore Book Club member).

A reluctant reader because I am not a big fan of this genre. What I didn’t expect was how much I’d connect with the characters. Nardus’s internal conflict and Grace’s resilience were highlights for me. It’s more than action — there’s real emotional weight behind every choice they make. Don’t be put off by the military cover and blurb – this is a super drama-thriller with a wonderful female protagonist. (Foreshore Book Club member).

Fractured Virtues is the kind of novel that lingers long after you’ve closed the final page. What initially appears to be a fast-paced military thriller quickly unfolds into something far richer: a story about moral ambiguity, loyalty under pressure, and the cost of survival when every choice carries consequences. What truly sets this book apart is its character work. Nardus is not a flawless hero, and that imperfection makes him compelling. His internal conflict — torn between duty, instinct, and conscience — adds depth to every decision he makes. Grace, meanwhile, brings emotional balance to the story with her resilience and determination. Their evolving relationship feels earned rather than forced, shaped by shared danger and hard truths rather than convenience. The novel also excels in its portrayal of power dynamics and corruption. The cartel presence isn’t just a source of action; it represents a wider commentary on control, fear, and fractured morality. The author resists the temptation to offer easy answers, instead allowing readers to sit with uncomfortable questions about right and wrong in extreme circumstances. For our book club, Fractured Virtues sparked some of the most engaging discussions we’ve had in months — particularly around ethics, survival, and how far someone can bend before they break. It’s a tense, thought-provoking, and ultimately rewarding read that balances action with substance. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy thrillers with depth and emotional resonance.
